Three Questions with Allison Rossett

The final installment of the "3 Questions" series features Allison Rossett. Feel free to connect with Allison in the comments section below.

1. What is your 140 character bio?

Allison is wired into the best of learning, technology & results without slavish devotion.

2. Tell us a little about your TechKnowledge 2012 session.

The session that American Express' Frank Nguyen and I will do is based on our article this month in T&D. Here is  how that article kicks off:

In the East, it is said that people who are yin are creative, passive, and easygoing. When they tend to lethargy, they are encouraged to become more yang. On the other hand, those who are yang are seen as active, precise, and controlled. They are nudged to strive toward yin. It is acceptable to never find balance between yin and yang, but instead to always seek, reflect, and add elements of the other.

In the West, people say yin and yang but often mean yin versus yang, good versus evil. We think there is some of that going on with formal and informal learning. People get heated, choose sides, affiliate with one way or the other, and even debate the better form. If informal learning is the goal, do you know if it is appropriate for your organization and outcomes? Are your programs deliberately designed, resulting in selected informal and formal strategies?
Those questions are difficult to answer because informal and formal learning are not firmly situated in the lexicon. If your program was more informal—or formal, for that matter—what would it look like? On what do decisions about formality and informality depend? 3. What's your favorite thing to do in Vegas?

Not really a big Vegas fan, which will keep me riveted to the conference. Last year I saw a snappy Beatles knock off and liked it much more than I expected. And a few years back, a memorable moment. I sat next to my brother while he won $4300 bucks at video poker.

I have been to Vegas several times but one thing I have not done yet is to do the helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. A Look Ahead to ASTD's TechKnowledge 2012

TechKnowledge planning committee member Judy Unrein (@jkunrein) wrote a great blog post about what she is most looking forward to at TechKnowledge 2012. Judy also collected thoughts from fellow advisory committee members and one theme is that they are all looking forward to connecting and sharing ideas. That’s really what makes and event like TechKnowledge special. It’s a rare opportunity to come together with colleagues, friends, and like-minded people to explore new ideas, discover best practices, and push the boundaries of our industry even further.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Las Vegas?

I love the shows in Las Vegas (Blue Man Group was one of my absolute favorites), but it's often difficult to get the time to go to a show during a conference week. This year, I am looking forward to connecting with other learning professionals and discussing big ideas in community with them.

Three Questions with Wayne Turmel

Wayne Turmel

Here's "Three Questions" with Wayne Turmel. Feel free to take this opportunity to connect with Wayne in the comments section below the post.

Question 1: What’s your 140 character bio?

Wayne Turmel is president of GreatWebMeetings.com and a well-known writer and speaker in the field of virtual communication and leadership.

Question 2: Tell us about your TK 2012 session.

My session is entitled “How to Roll Out Successful Virtual Training… or Not.” We will look at how companies roll out “webinar” style training—some successfully, most not without some drama. Does your company have a rollout plan that makes sense, or has it simply tossed the Training Department an order to “make it work”? In this session we’ll learn how the Organization, the Trainers, and the Participants play a role in making this kind of training work, and how to prepare each of them. Participants will hear and share success (and horror) stories and receive a simple assessment tool to go back to their companies and avoid some landmines!

Question 3: What’s your favorite thing to do in Las Vegas?

This is completely counter-intuitive but I’m an early riser, and with the time change from Chicago, that means I’m always up as the sun comes up over the desert. I love walking around at sunrise, watching the workers begin to prepare the day, exploring while the streets are empty and the city’s nocturnal denizens are scurrying back to their dens in various states of awareness. Basically, Las Vegas is a good place to catch me for a breakfast meeting!

Karl Kapp, professor of Instructional Technology @BloomU, Author of books on learning & technology, a blogger, consultant, speaker & father.

Question 2: Tell us about your TK 2012 session.

My session is about the concept of "gamification" many people have a negative perception of the word but I have a different perspective backed by sound research. In my session I am going to provide a decidedly unacademic look at the academic side of gamification (using game-based elements to enhance learning and motivation).

I am going to describe the findings from the research, give examples of gamification and games-based thinking for learning and then provide a list of practical tips a learning professional can implement into their learning program quickly and relatively easily. My session promises to be engaging and exciting showing you how to use the existing research literature in your own design and delivery of online learning. My presentation ends with a practical case study outlining how the research tips, techniques and practices can be applied in a real-life online learning situation.

Question 3: What’s your favorite thing to do in Las Vegas?

My favorite thing to do in Vegas is to walk the strip and go to all the interesting attractions like the lions at MGM, the animatronics show at Casears and the fountains at the Bellagio, eat lunch in New York New York and catch the Blue Man Group doing their stuff!

Three Questions with Jane Bozarth

bozarth headshotToday, we're leading off the "Three Questions" series with Jane Bozarth. Feel free to take this opportunity to connect with Jane and ask her questions in the comments section below the post.

Question 1: What’s your 140 character bio?

World's Oldest Millenial, Positive Deviant, Hot for Learnin'. Warning: WYSIWYG.

Question 2: Tell us about your TK 2012 session.

My TK12 session is "Social Media for Trainers". We'll take a look at several big buckets of tools -- like blogs and social profiles -- and examine them for what they really are. We'll also take a look at ways we can use these to extend and enhance our practice as L&D professionals, and get between those formal, scheduled events into those spaces where much workplace learning really occurs.

Question 3: What’s your favorite thing to do in Las Vegas?

I haven't done it yet, but TK happens to coincide with my birthday this year (January 26). I think I'm going to go to the firing-range-attraction-thing and try shooting a machine gun. I am not a gun aficionado, but it seems like a memorable thing to go do. Also: the best-kept secret in Vegas is a little noodle shop in Chinatown called Monta Ramen. Highly recommended!
